About Moraga Horsemen's Association

Moraga Horsemen's Association (MHA) represents a group of horse enthusiasts in the vicinity of Moraga, California,  founded in 1956. In addition to monthly gatherings, our club organizes occasional speakers, clinics, trail rides, and even overnight trips and social gatherings.

MHA has a facility on Canyon Road in Moraga on land leased from the East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD), including a two-acre arena area and 100 acres of pasture. The MHA property adjoins popular EBMUD trails, with scenic connections to Redwood Regional Park and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness.

Why Horses on Watershed Land?

Moraga Horsemen’s Association (MHA) pasture is owned by East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and leased to a cooperative of local MHA horse owners. This partnership serves the dual purpose of providing a more natural environment for boarding horses, while protecting this scenic watershed land adjacent to the Upper San Leandro Reservoir.

As stewards of EBMUD land, MHA members have been protecting the ecological integrity of this 100-acre parcel for more than 50 years, while reducing the fuel load for fire prevention. In addition, managed grazing and trampling opens up the mat of dead vegetation so emerging native grasses and flowers get enough sunlight to thrive. The resulting healthy vegetation helps to prevent erosion and hill slides.

Managing East Bay Land, Fisheries & Wildlife

EBMUD provides high-quality drinking water for 1.4 million customers in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. In doing so, EBMUD carefully manages the natural resources of its watershed land and protects the environment for future generations. About 29,000 acres of watershed lands in the East Bay provide needed protection for EBMUD’s high quality drinking water, while offering habitat for plants and animals – as well as a natural haven for the public to enjoy.

EBMUD engages in several partnerships for horse and cattle leases as a source of land management.
